Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, at Long Beach in CA. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise worked during the night shift as a nurse, so she could indulge her passion of theater and literature during the day. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's example that art can be an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Even though DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family, she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma and decided to make an documentary on the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still in university. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the house and examining the trash of one of members of the jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she made the decision to go into the industry of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at a small production studio right after she graduated from school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
